STIHL Recoil Starter Assemblies
The recoil starter is the pull-start mechanism that turns the engine over when you’re starting a petrol-powered machine. Pulling the starter handle rotates the recoil mechanism and engages the engine, starting the cycle.
With regular use, the rope, pulley, spring or other components within the starter can wear or become damaged. Where several components are affected, replacing the complete recoil starter assembly can be a straightforward way to restore the starting mechanism.
Replacement Recoil Starter Assemblies
Our range includes recoil starter assemblies for a wide variety of STIHL petrol-powered equipment, including:
Chainsaws
Brushcutters and strimmers
Blowers and blower vacuums
Hedge trimmers
Disc cutters
KombiTools and other petrol machines
There are model-specific assemblies for both older and newer STIHL equipment. For example, the range includes recoil starters for the TS410 and TS420, as well as assemblies for the FS38, HL45 and KM55, and the BG75, FS85, HT75 and KM85.
When Does a Recoil Starter Need Replacing?
A damaged recoil mechanism can make a machine difficult or impossible to start. Common signs of a problem include:
Starter rope failing to retract
A broken or frayed starter rope
A handle that’s become damaged or detached
The recoil mechanism feeling unusually loose or stiff
The starter failing to engage the engine
A damaged or broken recoil spring or pulley
Not every fault requires replacing the whole assembly. If only the rope, handle, pulley, spring or starter pawls are worn, you can probably get away with an individual replacement component or repair kit. At GHS, we also stock separate recoil handles and ropes, recoil repair kits, recoil springs and other recoil components.
Choosing the Correct STIHL Recoil Starter
Starter mechanisms can differ in their mounting points, pulley design, rope arrangement, spring and engagement mechanism, even if machines look similar.
Before ordering, check the exact STIHL model and original part number. Also check whether your machine uses a standard recoil or an ErgoStart system.
