How to Measure Your Chainsaw Bar Length

Measure the effective cutting length, not the total bar length. Place your tape measure at the tip of the bar and extend it to the point where the bar enters the chainsaw body (excluding any mounting hardware). Always round up to the nearest even inch, as chainsaw bars come in standard sizes like 12", 14", 16", 18", and 20".

Quick Tip

The effective cutting length is typically 2–3 inches shorter than the total bar length. If you're struggling to measure accurately, check the bar itself—the length is often stamped on the tail section near the mounting point.

How to Measure your Chainsaw Chain Pitch

Pitch is the distance between drive links, and it must match your bar specification. To measure it correctly:

  • Lay your chain flat on a stable surface
  • Locate three consecutive rivets (the small metal pins holding the chain links together)
  • Measure the distance between the centres of these three rivets
  • Divide that measurement by two to get your pitch

Common Pitch Sizes

The most common pitches you'll encounter are 1/4", .325", and 3/8". You'll often find the pitch stamped directly on your chainsaw bar, which saves you measuring manually.

Additional Specifications

When ordering replacement chains, you'll also need the gauge (thickness of the drive link). Common UK sizes are .043", .050", .058", and .063". This information is typically marked on your existing bar alongside the pitch measurement.
