Frequently Asked Questions About Chainsaw Safety Clothing

What chainsaw safety clothing do I need?

Chainsaws are undoubtedly dangerous pieces of equipment, no matter how well they’re designed. So, the PPE you need depends on the type of chainsaw work you’re doing, but appropriate protective equipment can include chainsaw protective trousers or leg protection, chainsaw boots, a helmet with visor or eye protection, gloves and hearing protection.

Be sure to always follow the safety instructions for your chainsaw and make sure your PPE is suitable for the work being undertaken.

Why do I need chainsaw protective trousers?

Chainsaws cause tens of thousands of severe injuries every year because of their fast-moving chains and the debris that may shoot out. Due to this, chainsaw trousers have specialist cut-protection material designed to help slow or stop a chainsaw chain when it comes into contact with the garment.

The material works by pulling fibres into the chain and around the drive sprocket, helping to impede the moving chain. Protective trousers are an important part of chainsaw PPE because the legs are particularly exposed when using a chainsaw.

What is the difference between chainsaw protection Class 1 and Class 2?

Chainsaw protective clothing is divided into different cut protection classes, which relate to the chain speed at which the protective material has been tested.

For example, Class 1 is tested at a chain speed of up to 20 m/s. Higher protection classes are tested at higher chain speeds. Always select PPE appropriate for your chainsaw, working conditions and level of training.

What is the difference between Design A and Design C chainsaw trousers?

The main difference lies in the area of the leg covered by the cut-protection material.

Design A provides cut protection primarily across the front of the legs and is intended for trained users who are doing conventional forestry work. Design C provides more extensive protection around the legs and is designed for those who aren’t very comfortable around a chainsaw, or in situations where additional leg coverage is required.

Always check the specific product's certification and intended use before choosing your PPE.

Which STIHL chainsaw clothing range should I choose?

STIHL offers different ranges to suit different levels and types of use:

  • FUNCTION - For occasional users and general chainsaw work

  • DYNAMIC - Designed with forestry work and demanding use in mind

  • ADVANCE - Professional-level protective clothing designed for forestry workers, arborists and other demanding applications

The right choice depends on how frequently you use your chainsaw, the type of work and the conditions in which you work.

Do I need chainsaw boots?

We would suggest that if you regularly use a chainsaw, appropriate chainsaw-rated footwear should form part of your PPE rather than relying on standard work boots. These protective boots provide additional protection for the feet and lower legs when working with a chainsaw.

Do I need a chainsaw helmet and visor?

Yes, a suitable helmet and eye or face protection will help protect your head, eyes and face from the debris that comes from using a chainsaw. Hearing protection can also be incorporated into suitable forestry helmets or worn separately where appropriate.

Do chainsaw gloves provide cut protection?

Some chainsaw gloves are designed with specific cut-protection properties, but not all work gloves will provide chainsaw protection. Check the product's stated certification and protection level - don’t just assume a standard pair of gloves is suitable for chainsaw work.

STIHL offers chainsaw gloves in different protection classes, including Classes 0 and 1.

Can I wear chainsaw chaps instead of chainsaw trousers?

Chainsaw chaps can provide an alternative form of leg protection for certain users and applications. STIHL's all-round leg protection products, for example, are designed to be worn over existing trousers and are available with Class 1, Design C cut protection.
